Thiruvananthapuram: The UDF government's Budget for 2026, presented by Chief Minister and Finance Minister V D Satheesan in the Kerala Assembly on Friday, unveiled a range of initiatives aimed at expanding health insurance coverage and strengthening social welfare across the state.
A
major announcement in the Budget was the launch of the Oommen Chandy Health
Insurance Scheme, a universal healthcare programme that will provide free
medical coverage of up to ₹25 lakh for every
family in Kerala. The government has allocated ₹10 crore towards the
initial implementation expenses of the scheme, which is expected to enhance
access to quality healthcare and ease the financial burden of treatment on
households.
Medisep to undergo overhaul
The
Budget also proposed a comprehensive restructuring of the Medisep health insurance scheme for
government employees. Satheesan said the existing programme would be revamped
to improve its effectiveness and address concerns raised by beneficiaries.
Detailed guidelines for the revised scheme are expected to be announced in the
coming months.
Better insurance protection for
fishermen
As
part of its welfare measures, the government announced plans to strengthen
accident insurance coverage for fishermen and allied workers. The revised
scheme is intended to provide greater financial security to those engaged in
the fisheries sector, which involves significant occupational risks.
E-stamping facility for private
insurers
The
Budget further proposed extending the e-stamping
facility to private insurance companies. The government said the move
would help ensure that stamp duty generated from insurance policies purchased
in Kerala remains within the state, thereby improving revenue collection and
streamlining administrative procedures.
