Doha: India celebrated a landmark moment in judo on Friday as Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh became the first-ever Indian judokas to win gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. Asmita clinched the women's 48kg title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Canada's Heidi Quach, while Harsh dominated Australia's Joshua Katz 10-0 to secure the men's 60kg gold.

Asmita's final was a gripping contest that remained evenly poised at 1-1 before entering the golden score period. After both judokas exchanged points during regulation time, the Indian produced a decisive Yuko in the golden score to seal a memorable victory. Harsh, meanwhile, delivered a composed performance in his final, breaking the deadlock with a decisive waza-ari that earned him a commanding 10-0 win and the gold medal.

Asmita's remarkable journey began in athletics, where she initially trained as an 800-metre runner before switching to judo under the guidance of her first coach. After joining Tripura Sports School in 2015, her rapid rise saw her earn a place at the Sports Authority of India's National Centre of Excellence in Bhopal in 2018. She has since established herself among India's top judokas, winning medals at the Asian Open, Junior Asia Cup Judo Championships and Commonwealth Judo Championships, including gold at the 2025 African Open in Casablanca and the 2023 Junior Asia Cup in Macau. The historic triumphs by Asmita and Harsh mark a significant milestone for Indian judo on the Commonwealth stage.
