Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies, will remain closed until the United States fulfills Tehran's conditions, which include compensation for war damages. The strait has been effectively blockaded by Iran since a U.S. and Israeli attack in late February. Iran insists on imposing tolls for passage and has targeted ships attempting to bypass its designated routes.
The continued hostilities in the waterway, previously open to free transit, led to the breakdown of an April ceasefire. International mediators are calling for a return to the peace path outlined in a June memorandum.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi mentioned that talks with Oman regarding the strait's transit and management are nearing completion. However, he emphasized that reopening Hormuz hinges on other conditions and reparations for breaches of the June agreement. Araghchi clarified that Iran is not directly negotiating with the U.S., but is instead "exchanging messages" through intermediaries.
