Jimenez's emotional goal inspires Mexico to winning start

Mexico began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa at the iconic Azteca Stadium. Julian Quinones scored the tournament's opening goal before veteran striker Raul Jimenez sealed the win with a powerful header in the second half.

The goal carried special significance for the 35-year-old Jimenez, who overcame a life-threatening skull injury suffered in 2020 and recently lost his father. After scoring, the striker pointed to the sky and was visibly emotional as teammates celebrated with him.

The strike was Jimenez's 46th international goal, moving him joint second on Mexico's all-time scoring list. It also marked a memorable first World Cup start for the experienced forward.

Mexico's victory gave the co-host nation a perfect start to the tournament in front of nearly 80,000 passionate supporters at the Azteca Stadium.
