South Korea rally past Czech Republic in World Cup opener

South Korea came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite dominating possession and chances, the Koreans fell behind when Czech captain Ladislav Krejci headed home in the 59th minute.

The response was swift as Hwang In-beom equalised eight minutes later with a clever finish after being set up by Lee Kang-in. South Korea then completed the comeback in the 80th minute when substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu tapped in the winning goal from Hwang's cross.

The Koreans survived late pressure, with goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu producing crucial saves to preserve the lead. The result marked South Korea's first winning start at a World Cup in four editions.

Captain Son Heung-min was influential throughout the match as South Korea earned a valuable three points to begin their campaign on a positive note.
