Lionel Messi will kick off his three-day India GOAT Tour by virtually unveiling a 21-metre iron statue of himself in Kolkata on Saturday. Depicting the football legend lifting the World Cup, the statue is the centrepiece of a tour that spans four Indian cities and may include a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Large fan zones, including a “Hola Messi” area featuring a life-sized throne setup and a replica of his Miami home, have been created to welcome the Argentine star.
During
his visit, Messi is expected to meet Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan and former
Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. Sculptor Monti Paul, who built the
massive statue in 40 days, called it a “matter of pride” and his tallest work
to date. Fans in Kolkata have expressed excitement, calling the tribute a dream
come true.
Messi will
also play short friendly matches in Kolkata and Hyderabad before travelling to
Mumbai and New Delhi, where he may meet Modi. His visit comes days after he won
his second consecutive MLS MVP award, following a title-winning season with
Inter Miami. Messi said he is honoured to return to India and eager to connect
with a new generation of fans.
