Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality issues guidelines on inspecting and handling fresh fish to ensure safety

The Ministry of Municipality has initiated a public awareness campaign aimed at educating residents on how to select fresh fish, ensuring their safety, and handling them properly from purchase to home storage.

Through a series of posts on its social media account, the ministry has offered clear and practical advice and guidance including visual and sensory checks for freshness, best practices for sellers and transporters, and tips for consumers to ensure fish safety.

The ministry advises consumers to look for fish with bright, shiny eyes; bright red or pink gills; firm, resilient flesh that springs back quickly when pressed; and a mild, natural smell. Poor quality indicators include dull eyes, pale gills, soft flesh, and a strong, unpleasant odor.

Additionally, the ministry has outlined responsibilities for those involved in the fish supply chain. Workers are advised to store fish in refrigerators, maintain adequate ice, use refrigerated vehicles, and keep fish in insulated containers. Fish sellers should sort fish for quality, clean it thoroughly, replenish display ice, check for unpleasant odors, and dispose of spoiled fish promptly.

Consumers are encouraged to purchase fish at the end of their shopping trip, transport it in an insulated cooler with ice, and ensure quick delivery home. The ministry stresses that proper chilling and rapid transport are vital to maintaining quality and safety.
