The
United States and Iran could resume negotiations as early as next week in
Islamabad, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing people familiar
with the matter. Both sides are working through mediators on a one-page,
14-point memorandum of understanding intended to establish the framework for a
month-long negotiating process aimed at ending the conflict.
The
proposed draft includes Iran's nuclear programme, reducing tensions in the
Strait of Hormuz, and possible arrangements for transferring Iran's highly
enriched uranium stockpiles to another country. However, several major issues
remain unresolved, with one of the main sticking points being the scope of
potential sanctions relief for Tehran, which the report said could complicate
or delay progress.
If negotiations advance, the initial one-month dialogue period could reportedly be extended by mutual agreement.
