Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay is reportedly closing in on the majority mark needed to form the next government in Tamil Nadu, with sources indicating that the Left parties and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) are expected to extend support to his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
According
to sources, support from five Congress MLAs and two legislators each from VCK,
the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the Communist Party of India could
take TVK past the required majority mark of 118 seats in the Assembly.
Vijay
is scheduled to meet Ravindra Narayana Ravi Arlekar at 4.30 pm, marking their
third meeting in as many days, as discussions continue over government
formation. The Governor had earlier reportedly declined Vijay’s claim, citing
insufficient support in the House.
TVK
emerged as the surprise winner in last month’s Assembly elections, securing 108
seats in its electoral debut and breaking the decades-long dominance of the Dravida
Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in state
politics.
The
Congress had already agreed to support TVK on the condition that the party
would not align with what it described as “communal forces,” in an apparent
reference to the Bharatiya Janata Party. The remaining uncertainty centred
around support from VCK and the Left parties, both of which had contested the
elections as allies of the DMK.
