Congress offers support to Vijay’s TVK with condition to keep out communal forces

Chennai: The Congress has extended support to actor Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to form the next government in Tamil Nadu following the party’s strong performance in the recent Assembly elections. The announcement was made by Girish Chodankar, AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu, who said the support would depend on the alliance keeping away “communal forces” that do not believe in the Constitution of India.

With Congress backing adding five MLAs to TVK’s tally, the party’s strength rises to 112 seats in the 234-member Assembly. Vijay’s party still requires the support of six more MLAs to cross the majority mark of 118. Reports suggest that TVK has also reached out to parties including the VCK, CPI, and CPM in an effort to secure additional support for government formation.

In the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Vijay-led TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in the state’s political landscape. Vijay contested from Trichy East and Perambur constituencies and won both seats. Sources indicate that he is likely to retain the Perambur seat, which could lead to a by-election in Trichy East.
