New
Delhi: An IndiGo flight was forced to evacuate passengers after a power
bank on board caught fire at Chandigarh airport in north-western India on
Tuesday afternoon.
The
incident occurred after IndiGo flight 6E 108 from Hyderabad had landed and was
stationary, according to an official statement from the airline. A passenger's
personal electronic device caught fire. All passengers were safely moved to the
terminal with no injuries reported, and the aircraft will undergo necessary
checks before resuming operations.
The
Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the power bank had been kept
in a seat pocket by a passenger on seat 39C. Cabin crew used two fire
extinguishers to put out the fire and deployed all six slides to evacuate
passengers.
According to DGCA regulations issued in 2026, power banks are allowed on flights only in carry-on luggage. Passengers are not permitted to use power banks on flights for charging devices, nor are such items to be stored in overhead compartments.
