New Delhi: Oscar-winning music composer A R Rahman has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent remarks, clarifying that he never intended to cause pain and that his words were misunderstood. In a video shared on his Instagram handle on Sunday, the 59-year-old composer said his lifelong purpose has been to connect people and celebrate India’s rich cultural diversity through music.
Rahman
emphasised that music has always been his way of honouring India and its
multicultural spirit. “India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home. I
understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood. But my purpose has
always been to uplift, honour and serve through music. I have never wished to
cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt,” he said in the video message.
Expressing
pride in his identity, Rahman said being Indian has given him the freedom to
express himself creatively and celebrate multiple voices. He highlighted
several of his recent projects, including Jhalaa presented at the WAVES
Summit in front of the Prime Minister, Rooh-e-Noor, collaborations with
young Naga musicians, the Sunshine Orchestra mentorship, and the creation of Secret
Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band. He also mentioned the
honour of composing music for Ramayana alongside Hollywood composer Hans
Zimmer.
The
clarification comes days after Rahman’s interview with BBC Asian Network, where
he spoke about receiving fewer work offers in recent years due to changes
within the Hindi film industry. In the interview, he suggested that a shift in
power dynamics, and possibly communal factors, may have played a role, though
not directly or openly.
Rahman
also made it clear that he does not actively chase work, believing that
sincerity in creativity should naturally attract opportunities. His latest
statement seeks to put an end to the controversy, reiterating his commitment to
unity, creativity and serving the nation through music rather than division.
