Doha,
Qatar: Reiterating the long-standing demand to ensure voting rights for Indian
citizens residing overseas, the Qatar INCAS Pathanamthitta District Committee
submitted a memorandum to UDF Convener and Attingal Member of Parliament, Adv.
Adoor Prakash. The memorandum was handed over during a cordial family gathering
organised in Qatar on Saturday evening, January 17, 2026.
In
the memorandum, the committee urged the Union Government to enable Non-Resident
Indians (NRIs) to exercise their voting rights in Lok Sabha and State Assembly
elections by officially designating Indian embassies in their respective
countries of residence as authorised polling centres. The committee pointed out
that such a step would allow lakhs of overseas Indians to actively participate
in India’s democratic process without the burden of travelling back to the
country.
The
memorandum also stressed the need to include overseas Indian citizens in the
SIR (Special Intensive Revision) of electoral rolls. Highlighting the practical
difficulties faced by expatriates in completing documentation within the
existing timelines, the committee demanded that Parliament consider extending
the deadline for submitting Form 6A for expatriate Indians worldwide.
Responding
to the demands, Adv. Adoor Prakash MP assured the delegation that he would
raise the issue in Parliament and intervene at the appropriate levels to ensure
follow-up action. The committee expressed confidence that the matter would
receive serious consideration at the national level.
The
Qatar INCAS Pathanamthitta District Committee reaffirmed its commitment to
continuing its efforts to strengthen the rights, representation and democratic participation
of expatriate Indians, particularly those who contribute significantly to the
Indian economy and society from abroad.
On
the same occasion, MP Adv. Adoor Prakash presented a memento on behalf of the
district committee to INCAS Qatar Pathanamthitta District Committee Patron Mr.
Kuruvilla George and his family, who are returning to India after completing 45
years of expatriate life in Qatar. The gathering was addressed by MP Adv. Adoor
Prakash, District Committee President Mr. Ronsy Mathai, General Secretary Adv.
Jithin Jose Madappallil, INCAS Central Committee Treasurer Mr. Jees Joseph, District Advisory
Board Chairman Mr. Renju Sam Ninan, and Treasurer Mr. Jetty George.
