Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) sentenced former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to death on Monday. Hasina was found guilty of crimes against humanity related to last year's student-led protests that resulted in the fall of her Awami League government.

The tribunal's decision also delivered its judgment against two of Hasina's aides - former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun - over the same charges. Al-Mamun, who was present in court, was spared the death penalty after cooperating as a state witness.

The tribunal found Hasina guilty on three counts: obstructing justice, ordering the killing of protesters, and failing to prevent retaliatory killings. "We have decided to inflict her with only one sentence-that is, sentence of death," stated Judge Golam Mortuza Mozumder to the packed courtroom in Dhaka.
