Dhaka: Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) will deliver its verdict on Monday in the high-profile case against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who is being tried in absentia on charges of crimes against humanity linked to last year’s student-led uprising that overthrew her government. The tribunal is set to begin proceedings at 11:00 am.
The
trial also includes former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and ex-police
chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty
for all three. The charges stem from the violent crackdown during the 2024 July
Uprising, during which a UN rights office report estimated that up to 1,400
people were killed between July 15 and August 15.
Hasina and
Kamal were declared fugitives by the court, while Mamun initially stood trial
in person before later turning approver. The verdict is expected to have
significant political implications as Bangladesh continues to navigate the
aftermath of the historic uprising.
