Doha, Qatar: The Embassy of India in Doha marked Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) on January 9 with a special ceremony at the Indian Cultural Centre, celebrating the invaluable contributions of the Indian diaspora to India’s global journey. The event brought together community leaders, professionals, and representatives of Indian organisations in Qatar, highlighting the enduring bond between India and its overseas citizens.

Addressing the gathering, Indian Ambassador to Qatar, Mr. Vipul, extended warm greetings to the Indian community and reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to working closely with every Indian living in Qatar. He underlined the importance of the diaspora as articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that Indians abroad serve as a powerful bridge between India and the world, enriching host societies while remaining deeply connected to their cultural roots.

This year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas celebrations were themed around “Nari Shakti” (Women Power), with a special focus on recognising women leaders from the Indian community in Qatar. The Embassy honoured women who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, community service, and dedication in strengthening people-to-people ties and fostering India–Qatar friendship.

In the education category, the Embassy felicitated Ms. Hameeda Kader, Principal of MES Indian School, and Ms. Asna Nafees, Principal of DPS–Modern Indian School.  Both were recognised for their outstanding leadership in promoting academic excellence and for nurturing future generations with strong educational foundations rooted in Indian values.

Under the community service category, several women leaders were honoured for their tireless contributions to cultural, social, and welfare initiatives.

The awardees included Ms. Anjana Menon (President, ICC Women’s Forum), Ms. Nandini Abbagouni (ICC Managing Committee Member), Ms. Aparna Sharath (Billawas Qatar), Ms. Usha Patil (Maharashtra Mandal), Ms. Zareena Ahad (ICBF Advisory Council), and Ms. Neelambari Sushant (ICBF Managing Committee Member).

The Embassy also recognised the role of media in strengthening diaspora engagement and bilateral relations. In the media category, Ms. Anshu Jain, Ms. Aafrin Khan, Ms. Nazia Amir, and Ms. Anu Sharma were felicitated for amplifying the voices of the Indian community and promoting positive narratives that enhance India–Qatar friendship.

The celebrations concluded with two engaging panel discussions centred on the theme of “Nari Shakti,” where panelists shared insights into the resilience, leadership, and achievements of Indian women in Qatar.

The discussions highlighted how women continue to drive progress across professional and social spheres, reinforcing the growing influence and positive impact of the Indian diaspora abroad.
