Doha, Qatar: Grand Mall FC Malappuram delivered a remarkable and inspiring performance in the QIFF Super Cup, emerging as one of the strongest and most admired teams of the tournament. Despite finishing as runners-up, Grand Mall Malappuram FC earned widespread recognition for their consistent dominance, quality football, and spirited journey to the final, proving that true champions are defined not only by trophies but by performance, discipline, and unity.
This edition of the QIFF Super Cup marked a special milestone for Malappuram football, as it was the first time the district competed under the banner of Grand Mall FC Malappuram, having previously participated under different organisations. The team’s journey was made even more inspiring by the fact that nearly 99 percent of the players are working professionals in Qatar, who came to the country for employment but continued to pursue their passion for football with commitment and pride.
Grand Mall Malappuram FC’s dominance was evident right from the league round. The team finished at the top of the league table, scoring an impressive 17 goals while conceding just two, underlining their attacking power and rock-solid defence. Their superior goal difference clearly reflected their control and consistency throughout the group stage.
One of the most memorable moments of the tournament came when Grand Mall Malappuram FC registered a stunning 8–0 victory over Hot N Cool FC Kannur, one of the biggest and most convincing wins of the competition. The match showcased the team’s attacking depth, tactical discipline, and excellent coordination on the field.
After an impressive league-stage campaign, the team advanced to the semi-finals with notable victories over strong contenders such as MAPS Calicut and United Ernakulam. Continuing their fine form, they defeated United Ernakulam in the semi-final to seal a well-earned place in the final, advancing through the knockout stages without the need for extra time or penalty shootouts and winning their matches with clear margins.
Leadership
played a crucial role in Grand Mall Malappuram FC’s success. The team was
captained by Thoufeeq, an experienced footballer who has competed in the Saudi
League and previously served as a league captain (SIF). His calm leadership and
vast experience were instrumental in guiding the team through high-pressure
matches.
The
squad featured several standout performers. Jesin Shagin, who represented Tamil Nadu, was a key figure in
midfield and was deservedly named Best Player of the Tournament
for his consistent and influential performances. Shem Martin, who played the Santosh Trophy for Tamil
Nadu, featured in the Nepal League, and holds AFC exposure, played a dual role
as both player and coach,
adding tactical depth and guidance to the team. Fazalu
Rahman, a former Malappuram FC player in the
Kerala Super League, brought valuable top-level experience,
while Sujin, a university-level
player, represented the promising younger generation. Jamshy emerged as the team’s attacking spearhead,
finishing as Top Scorer for
Grand Mall FC.
Managed
by Ishaq, the team maintained
excellent discipline, unity, and focus throughout the tournament. The blend of
experienced campaigners and young talents helped Grand Mall FC maintain balance
and consistency across all matches.
Though
the title narrowly eluded them, Grand Mall FC Malappuram’s journey in the QIFF
Super Cup has set a new benchmark for team performance, professionalism, and
community representation. Their achievement stands as a proud moment for
Malappuram football and the Malayali expatriate community in Qatar.
The final match was a thrilling and closely contested encounter, with Grand
Mall FC Malappuram finishing level with their opponents at full time and after
extra time. With no separation even after regulation and additional play, the
match was decided only in sudden death, bringing an intense and dramatic
conclusion to an outstanding tournament journey for Grand Mall FC.
