Qatar tops MENA region in 2025 Global Peace Index

Doha, Qatar: Qatar has once again secured its position as the most peaceful country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, ranking first regionally and 27th globally in the 2025 edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI). This marks the seventh time Qatar has achieved this regional distinction in the index’s 19-year history. The recognition underscores the nation’s robust security framework, low crime rates, and strong governance, which align closely with the goals outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030.

The Global Peace Index, compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), evaluates 163 countries based on indicators across three domains: Societal Safety and Security, Ongoing Conflict, and Militarization. Qatar’s high performance, particularly in societal safety-where it ranked ninth globally in 2023 and remained strong in 2025-is attributed to its low levels of political instability and criminal activity, as well as its minimal involvement in regional or international conflicts.

Despite the MENA region being the least peaceful globally due to conflicts in countries like Yemen, Syria, and Sudan, Qatar stands out as the only MENA nation in the global top 30. This distinction highlights its success in maintaining internal stability through integrated security strategies and collaboration among state institutions. Qatar’s balanced approach to defense, with limited military expenditure relative to its GDP, also contributes positively to its peacefulness score.

Globally, the 2025 GPI reveals a concerning decline in peace, with a 0.36% drop compared to the previous year, driven by conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza and increasing militarization in over 100 countries. Yet, Qatar’s consistent leadership in peace efforts-supported by its diplomatic initiatives, economic diversification, and global engagement-continues to position it as a model of resilience and stability in an increasingly turbulent world.
