San Francisco: Qatar
goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada emerged as the hero of the nation's historic 1-1
draw against Switzerland, becoming the first Qatari player ever to be named Man
of the Match at a FIFA World Cup. While Boualem Khoukhi's dramatic 94th-minute
equaliser secured Qatar's first-ever World Cup point, it was Abunada's
outstanding display between the posts that laid the foundation for the
memorable result.
The 26-year-old
goalkeeper faced relentless pressure from a Swiss side that dominated
possession and created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match.
Abunada produced seven crucial saves, repeatedly denying Switzerland's
attackers and keeping Qatar in the contest despite long periods of defensive
pressure. His composure and shot-stopping ability proved vital as the hosts
fought to stay within reach of their European opponents.
Although he conceded a first-half penalty converted by Breel Embolo, Abunada responded brilliantly, refusing to let the setback affect his performance. His resilience inspired the Qatari side, and as Khoukhi headed home the dramatic stoppage-time equaliser, Abunada's contribution was widely recognised as one of the key reasons behind Qatar's landmark achievement. The Man of the Match award crowned a historic night for both the goalkeeper and Qatari football.
