San Francisco: Qatar secured their first-ever point
in FIFA World Cup history after Boualem Khoukhi scored a dramatic stoppage-time
equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their Group B opener on
Saturday.
Switzerland
took the lead in the first half when Breel Embolo converted a penalty after
goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada fouled Remo Freuler inside the box. The Swiss
dominated much of the match but failed to extend their advantage despite
creating several opportunities.
Qatar
showed resilience throughout the contest and continued to push for an
equaliser. Under head coach Julen Lopetegui, who was managing his first-ever
World Cup match, the Asian side remained competitive against the European
opponents.
Their
persistence paid off in the 94th minute when Boualem Khoukhi powered home a
header at the back post to secure a memorable draw. Qatar will next face
co-hosts Canada in Vancouver, while Switzerland take on Bosnia in Los Angeles.
