Delhi on high alert as CJP protest prompts metro restrictions and internet shutdown

New Delhi: Delhi has been placed under tight security ahead of a proposed Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Jantar Mantar on Saturday. Around 25,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed across the national capital to maintain law and order.

Authorities have imposed entry and exit restrictions at 45 Delhi Metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, New Delhi and Kashmere Gate. Security has also been strengthened at railway stations, bus terminals and city borders, while several train services have reportedly been cancelled.

Mobile internet services will be suspended within a 4-kilometre radius of Jantar Mantar from 10 pm on October 9 until 10 pm on October 10. Internet services in the rest of Delhi will remain unaffected, according to sources.

Delhi Police denied permission for the protest, citing inadequate notice, alleged violations of conditions during an earlier demonstration and concerns over potential law-and-order problems. Police said the application for the October 10 gathering was submitted on October 7, despite guidelines requiring applications at least 10 days in advance.

The CJP protest is aimed at raising allegations of voter-list manipulation during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, including issues related to Form 6, used to apply for inclusion in the voter list. Authorities have urged the public to maintain peace, while commuters have been advised to check official updates before travelling.
