New Delhi has rejected concerns raised by the United Nations human rights office over the detention of hundreds of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) supporters in Delhi, describing them as “unwarranted interference” in India’s internal affairs.
In
a statement posted on its India at UN account on X, India said the concerns
expressed by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human
Rights (OHCHR) were misplaced.
India
said the country’s Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly,
supported by independent institutions, an independent judiciary and a free
media. However, it added that the exercise of this right is subject to
reasonable restrictions in the interest of public order.
The
statement also defended the actions of Indian authorities, saying they act in
accordance with the law and that courts remain available to address grievances.
India urged the UN human rights office to give comparable attention to
large-scale protests in other parts of the world, stressing the need for
impartiality and non-selectivity in carrying out its mandate.
