Emininent historian Dr. M.G.S. Narayanan passes away at 93

Kozhikode, Kerala: Renowned historian Dr. M.G.S. Narayanan passed away at his residence in Malaparambu, Kozhikode. He was 93 years old. Dr. Narayanan, a native of Ponnani, had been battling age-related illnesses.

He served as the Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and was the former Head of the Department of History at Calicut University. Known for his forthright views, Dr. Narayanan made unparalleled contributions to Kerala’s historical research and cultural studies.

Dr. Narayanan conducted authoritative studies on the Chera dynasty, leading to his landmark book Perumals of Kerala. His research was distinguished by the discovery and analysis of inscriptions and copper plates, significantly enriching Kerala's historical scholarship. 

An internationally respected scholar, he published numerous research papers and served as a visiting professor at universities in Britain and Russia. His major works include Indian Historical Understanding, Literary Offences, Foundations of Kerala History, The Story of Calicut, Secular Caste and Secular Religion, Democracy and Communism, and Perumals of Kerala (in English).

Dr. Narayanan is survived by his wife Premalatha and children Vijay Kumar (Retd. Air Force) and Vinaya Manoj (dancer). The funeral will take place today at 4 PM at the Mavoor Road crematorium.
