Manama: Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary
General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said the stability of the Arabian Gulf region
constitutes a fundamental pillar of international peace and security, stressing
that the security of GCC states is indivisible. Speaking at the 22nd Regional
Security Summit, the IISS Manama Dialogue 2026, he said building a stable and
sustainable regional security architecture requires strict adherence to
international law, respect for state sovereignty, stronger collective defence,
prioritising diplomacy and safeguarding the security of waterways and energy
supplies.
Albudaiwi said developments in the region
since 28 February had put the foundations of regional security to a critical
test following Iranian attacks that targeted GCC states and their civilian and
vital infrastructure, causing casualties. He noted the GCC states were not
party to the war and had exerted intensive diplomatic efforts for mediation and
de-escalation while exercising the utmost restraint. The repercussions extended
to the global economy through disruption of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,
through which about a quarter of the world's seaborne oil trade passed before
the crisis, affecting energy prices, shipping and insurance costs and
international supply chains.
He said the GCC states believe sustainable
security cannot be achieved through military solutions alone but requires
addressing the root causes of crises and bolstering development and stability.
He highlighted the GCC's continued support for Yemen's legitimate government
and efforts towards a comprehensive political solution in line with agreed
references.
Albudaiwi reiterated that lasting peace in the region remains linked to a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian cause based on the two-state solution and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. He added that the concept of regional security now also encompasses water and food security and confronting climate challenges as essential elements for sustaining stability and development.
