Manama: Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member
states are set to sign a general agreement on the GCC railway project on Sunday
in Manama, marking a major step toward connecting the six Gulf countries through
an integrated rail network. The signing ceremony will be held under the
patronage and in the presence of Bahrain's Crown Prince and Prime Minister
Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, with the participation of GCC transport
ministers and the bloc's secretary-general.
The GCC General Secretariat outlined four key
pillars of the agreement, covering project implementation, technical
integration, coordination and regional connectivity. Under the first pillar,
member states will commit to implementing and operating the railway project in
accordance with an agreed action plan and timeline.
The second pillar focuses on technical and
operational compatibility, ensuring national railway networks are
interconnected and comply with common specifications, interoperability
requirements and safety standards. The third establishes coordination and
follow-up mechanisms, defining the responsibilities of member states and
strengthening cooperation with the GCC Railways Authority to monitor
implementation progress and address potential obstacles.
The fourth pillar aims to enhance connectivity across the Gulf by providing safe, cost-effective and environmentally friendly transportation for passengers and freight. The project is also expected to facilitate trade and strengthen economic and social ties among GCC member states.
