Doha, Qatar: The General Tax Authority (GTA) has announced the upcoming implementation of a new Excise Tax mechanism on sweetened drinks, set to begin on July 6, 2026. This move, based on a Tiered Volumetric Model, will calculate taxes according to the sugar or added sweeteners present in taxable beverages and products.
In a statement released on Monday, the Authority clarified that this new mechanism is in accordance with Law No. (2) of 2026, which amends certain provisions of the Excise Tax Law, including the list of goods subject to taxation. The amendments broaden the scope of taxable items to include sugar-sweetened drinks, such as soft drinks and juices with added sugar, as well as products that can be converted into beverages and contain sugar or added sweeteners, including concentrates, powders, extracts, and similar products.
