The Indian government has approved the largest fighter jet acquisition in the nation's history, authorizing the purchase of 26 Rafale Marine fighter aircraft for the Indian Navy. Valued at over Rs 63,000 crore, the deal will be executed through a government-to-government agreement with France. The contract encompasses 22 single-seater and four twin-seater Rafale Marine jets, along with a comprehensive package that includes fleet maintenance, logistical support, personnel training, and offset obligations involving indigenous manufacturing components.
The initial deliveries of these aircraft are expected to commence approximately five years after the agreement is signed. These jets will be deployed on INS Vikrant, India's first domestically-built aircraft carrier, enhancing the Navy's existing capabilities, which currently feature the MiG-29K.
Furthermore, the agreement will advance the Indian Air Force's (IAF) operational range by upgrading its aerial refueling system. This will enable "buddy-buddy" refueling among around 10 IAF Rafale jets, significantly extending their operational range.
