Indian
nurse Nimisha Priya, 37, originally from Kerala’s Palakkad district, is set to
be executed in Yemen on July 16, according to a report by The Indian Express.
Priya was convicted in 2017 for the murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mehdi,
a man she had partnered with to open a medical clinic. The court found her
guilty of sedating Talal in an attempt to retrieve her seized passport, which
led to his death from a drug overdose.
After
the incident, Priya and her colleague, a Yemeni woman named Hanan, allegedly
dismembered Talal’s body and disposed of it in a water tank. The case, handled
largely by the Houthi militia, progressed through Yemen’s legal system,
culminating in the Supreme Judicial Council upholding the death sentence in
2024, with final approval from President Rashad al-Alimi.
Social
worker Samuel Jerome Baskaran, who is in contact with Talal’s family and Yemeni
officials, confirmed that the public prosecutor has formally issued the
execution order. He noted that while the date has been set, there is still a
possibility for intervention from the Indian government to halt the execution.
Nimisha Priya moved to Yemen in 2011 to work as a nurse. Her husband and daughter returned to India in 2014 due to financial hardship, and the ongoing conflict in Yemen prevented any reunion. She remains imprisoned in Sana’a, the Yemeni capital currently under Houthi control.
