Nothing much government can do: Centre on Nimisha Priya's execution in Yemen

New Delhi: The Central government on Monday informed the Supreme Court that its ability to intervene in the case of Nimisha Priya, the Kerala nurse facing execution in Yemen on July 16, is extremely limited. The statement came during the hearing of a last-minute plea seeking urgent government action to prevent her execution.

Attorney General R Venkataramani, representing the Centre, told the court that the government had already exhausted its diplomatic options. He emphasized the complexities involved, noting that Yemen is not diplomatically recognized by India and that any resolution involving "blood money" must be reached through private negotiations between the concerned parties.

“There’s nothing much the government can do,” Venkataramani stated, underlining the constraints posed by Yemen’s political and diplomatic situation. The court was told that while the government sympathizes with the situation, its capacity to intervene directly is severely restricted under the prevailing circumstances
