Singh, the world-renowned marathon runner known as the ‘Turbaned Tornado,’
passed away at the age of 114 after being struck by an unidentified vehicle
near his village in Punjab’s Jalandhar district. The incident occurred on
Monday evening while he was out for a walk. He was taken to a private hospital
but later succumbed to his injuries. Police have registered a case of rash and
negligent driving and are reviewing CCTV footage to trace the vehicle involved.
Fauja Singh began his marathon career in 2000 at the age of 89 and gained global fame for completing several major races, including the London Marathon and the Toronto Waterfront Marathon, where he became the oldest person to complete a full marathon at 100. Tributes poured in from across the country, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders hailing him as a true inspiration who promoted fitness and discipline among youth.
