London: An Indian-origin woman has won a £6.6 million (approximately ₹85 crore) settlement after a 23-year-long divorce battle in the United Kingdom, bringing one of the country's most extraordinary family court disputes to a close.
The
case began in 2002 when Varsha Gohil filed for divorce from her husband,
Bhadresh Gohil, citing adultery and unreasonable behaviour. At the time, she
accepted a settlement worth about £270,000 and retained the family car, but
remained convinced that her former husband had not disclosed all of his assets.
Years
later, the case took a dramatic turn when Bhadresh Gohil was convicted of money
laundering, forgery and conspiracy to defraud in connection with a major
financial crime investigation. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2011,
and investigators uncovered assets worth tens of millions of pounds that had
not been revealed during the divorce proceedings.
The
discoveries prompted Varsha to challenge the original settlement. In a landmark
2015 ruling, the UK Supreme Court allowed the financial agreement to be
reopened, stating that a spouse should not benefit from failing to disclose
assets during divorce proceedings.
The
dispute eventually reached the High Court, which ruled that a portion of the
frozen assets had legitimate origins and formed part of the couple's marital
wealth. The court awarded Varsha £6.6 million, while a recent Court of Appeal
decision ruled out any further appeals, finally ending the two-decade-long
legal battle.
