Thiruvananthapuram:
The UDF government has announced a new free health insurance programme named
after former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, offering annual health coverage of
up to Rs 25 lakh per family. The scheme was unveiled by Governor Rajendra Arlekar
during the first policy address of the VD Satheesan government.
The Oommen Chandy
Health Insurance Scheme was one of the UDF’s major election promises and is
being presented as a continuation of Chandy’s legacy in public healthcare. The
earlier Karunya scheme introduced during his tenure was widely regarded as a
landmark initiative for ordinary citizens.
The new insurance
programme aims to provide financial protection against rising medical expenses,
including costly treatments such as cancer care, ICU services, major surgeries,
and advanced diagnostic tests. The government hopes the scheme will ensure that
no family is denied treatment due to financial constraints.
While the announcement has generated significant public interest, details regarding implementation, eligibility criteria, and the launch date have not yet been disclosed. More clarity is expected in the coming days on how the scheme will be rolled out across the state.
