US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described India as a “key partnership for the 21st century” during his four-day visit to New Delhi, highlighting the growing strategic relationship between the two democracies amid evolving global challenges and opportunities. Speaking at the US Embassy during celebrations marking the 250th Independence Day of the United States, Rubio said India and the US are well-positioned to work together on major global and economic issues.
Rubio stressed that the partnership between the two nations is built on shared values and common interests. He said the collaboration between India and the US could help improve the lives of people in both countries and contribute positively to the wider global community. Calling the bilateral ties “valuable and strategic,” he noted that the relationship would play an important role in shaping the future of the modern world.
The US Secretary of State also underlined the vast scope for cooperation in sectors linked to the modern economy. According to Rubio, India and the United States together are ideally positioned to address key global opportunities and challenges through joint efforts in innovation, trade, technology, and economic development. He added that his visit aimed at reinforcing the strength and importance of the partnership between Washington and New Delhi.
During his address, Rubio praised India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, describing him as a “truly wise gentleman” and appreciating his leadership and diplomatic engagement. Rubio said he had developed a strong working relationship with Jaishankar and commended the minister for the “phenomenal” work he continues to do for India on the global stage.
The event also featured a special performance by Oscar-winning music composer A. R. Rahman, with his iconic anthem “Jai Ho” becoming one of the highlights of the evening. Jaishankar and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor were among the dignitaries present at the celebration. Rubio is also scheduled to attend the upcoming Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday.
