New Delhi - US President Donald Trump made a surprise live phone appearance during an event in Delhi attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where he expressed strong admiration for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and highlighted the growing ties between the two nations. The event marked the 250th anniversary celebrations of the US Declaration of Independence.
Speaking
over the phone while Rubio addressed the gathering, Trump described Modi as a
close friend and said he was a “big fan” of the Indian leader. “We have never
been closer to India. India can count on me 100 per cent and our country. If
they need any help, they know where to call,” Trump said, drawing applause from
the audience.
The
US President also praised the strength of the American economy and underlined
Washington’s willingness to support India. “We are setting records with a
record economy and stock market. Anything India wants, they get,” Trump
remarked. He also showered praise on Rubio, calling him the “greatest secretary
of state in the history of the US.”
Earlier
in the day, Rubio held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar
focusing on trade, defence cooperation, energy security, and critical minerals.
Rubio said the United States and India are close to finalising a long-awaited
bilateral trade agreement that would be “beneficial” and “sustainable” for both
countries.
Rubio’s
visit comes amid renewed discussions on trade relations following recent US
immigration policy changes and tariff-related concerns. Stressing the
importance of balancing trade, Rubio noted that India remains one of America’s
leading trade partners and said negotiations are progressing toward a fair and
comprehensive economic framework between the two countries.
