Doha: Iran's
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has told Al Jazeera that a US attempt to open
dialogue is "a positive step," saying Tehran has studied a letter
sent by US Vice President JD Vance. Araghchi said an Iranian delegation is in
Qatar to continue talks with mediators, adding that his aide is currently in
Doha for consultations. There are currently no plans for meetings with US
officials, he said.
Araghchi said
mediators have presented proposals on the nuclear dossier, which Iran is
reviewing as part of a second phase. He said Iran does not rule out the
possibility of being attacked, adding that its forces are "at the highest
level of readiness," and acknowledged the effects of US-imposed economic
pressure but said Iran "will not surrender." Iran insists on the
restoration of oil waivers, the release of frozen assets including $6 billion
held in Qatar, and the lifting of sanctions.
The remarks came
as Iran's supreme leader ordered the military to deliver an "immediate, effective
response without geographical limitations" to any potential threat,
according to the IRNA news agency. His directive also included updating a
database of targets so that US and Israeli assets would be within reach of
Iran's armed forces.
Iranian media reported that a US drone attacked two fishing boats off Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz, injuring two fishermen, while two others who had been missing were found. Analysts say talks to end the conflict require compromises Washington may be unwilling to make, and Qatari mediation efforts are continuing.
