Iran sets five conditions for regional security as Qatar remains hopeful of US-Iran deal

Doha: Iran’s armed forces chief of staff Major-General Ali Abdollahi has outlined five conditions for lasting regional security, as Qatar steps up mediation efforts to revive negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, the conditions include an end to hostilities across the region, including Lebanon and Gaza, the lifting of sanctions, the release of frozen Iranian assets, war reparations and recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

The proposal also calls for international guarantees against future aggression under a regional security framework for West Asia. It comes amid growing tensions following reported US strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said on Tuesday that Qatari mediators had held discussions with Iranian officials in Tehran and that both sides were reviewing proposals to resume negotiations. He expressed hope for an agreement, stressing that diplomatic efforts were continuing with Qatar and Pakistan playing key mediation roles.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the responsibility to prevent war was now in America’s hands. US Vice President JD Vance has also expressed optimism about reaching a negotiated settlement, although tensions and mutual mistrust continue to pose challenges to diplomatic efforts.
