Meta introduces "AI Insights" to let parents monitor teen AI topics

Meta has launched a new "AI Insights" feature to give parents a weekly overview of the topics their teenagers discuss with the company’s AI assistant. Available through parental supervision tools on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, the dashboard categorizes interactions into themes such as school, health, and entertainment. While parents can see these broad subject areas, the tool is designed to protect privacy by not revealing the actual messages, specific prompts, or AI responses.

To ensure safety, the feature includes proactive alerts that notify parents directly if a teenager attempts to engage the AI on high-risk subjects, such as self-harm or suicide. Meta has collaborated with the Cyberbullying Research Center to provide parents with "conversation starters" to help them discuss AI usage with their children. Additionally, a new AI Wellbeing Expert Council has been formed to offer ongoing guidance on safety protocols for younger users.

The update follows legal scrutiny regarding child safety and the recent suspension of celebrity-modeled AI personas for teenage accounts. By offering these oversight tools, Meta aims to provide a more transparent and secure environment for minors interacting with its core AI product. The feature is currently available in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Brazil, with plans for a global rollout in the coming weeks.
