MoPH urges careful selection of school backpacks as new academic year approaches

Doha, Qatar: Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health has issued guidance on selecting and using school backpacks as the new academic year approaches.

The ministry emphasized the need for backpack choices that support children's posture and prevent back and shoulder issues. The guidance informs that unsuitable backpacks or incorrect usage can lead to health issues such as back pain, hunchback, and spinal curvature.

The ministry's "Ideal School Backpack" guide, posted on social media channels, suggests that backpacks be made from durable, high-quality, water-resistant materials and should not exceed 10 to 15 percent of a student's body weight. Key features should include thick, padded back support, wide padded shoulder straps, and a waist belt to evenly distribute weight.

For families considering wheeled backpacks, the ministry recommends options with large wheels and adjustable handles. Proper distribution of school supplies within the backpack compartments is crucial to maintain balance and reduce strain.

Parents play a vital role in ensuring safe backpack use by helping children select age-appropriate bags and teaching them the correct way to wear and lift them. The ministry advises seeking medical attention if children exhibit signs like uneven shoulders or back pain.
