Increasing number of countries move to ban social media access for children

The European Union is considering regulations to limit social media access for children, joining a global trend of similar measures. According to an AFP tally, over 20 countries have either implemented or proposed restrictions, with five already enforcing them. Most of these measures target children under 15 or 16 and have been enacted recently.

An expert committee is set to present its recommendations to the European Commission on Monday regarding a potential social media ban for children in the 27-nation EU. Australia has banned social media for under-16s since December 2025, while Brazil requires platforms to link under-16s' accounts to their parents and verify users' ages.

In China, progressive restrictions have been in place since 2019, initially limiting online gaming before extending to social media and streaming platforms in 2023. Indonesia and Malaysia have both enacted similar bans this year, excluding under-16s from major platforms. Turkiye's recent legislation will prevent under-15s from accessing social media starting in late 2026, and the United Arab Emirates announced plans to implement a social media ban for under-15s next year.
