US President Donald Trump has said that the United States will reinstate the naval blockade of Iran, declaring that the U.S. will "become the guardian" of the Strait of Hormuz.
This announcement comes amid escalating tensions with Iran that threaten to undermine efforts toward achieving a lasting peace.
Trump made these remarks during an interview with Fox News and in a post on Truth Social on Monday, shortly after the latest exchange of attacks between the U.S. and Iran.
Trump stated in Truth Social that, "We are reinstating THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it is only stopping Iran's ships or customers from entering or leaving."
He emphasised, "The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,' but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security to this very volatile section of the World.” "The process and formation will begin immediately," he added.
