Doha: The
National Cyber Security Agency has launched a public awareness campaign
reminding citizens and residents that protecting personal information begins
with individual responsibility.
In
a message shared on X, the agency emphasised that every permission granted to
an organisation or digital service involves sharing part of a person's personal
data, encouraging users to read privacy notices carefully, verify how their
information will be handled, and make informed decisions before providing
consent. The NCSA also released a two-part 'Privacy Notice Reviewing Guide,'
outlining 12 practical questions to consider before sharing personal
information with companies, websites, or mobile applications.
The
first section of the guide advises users to identify who is collecting their
data, examine the type of information being requested, and understand why it is
being collected. Users should check whether an organisation is asking only for
essential information or for sensitive personal data such as identification or
health-related details. The guide also recommends verifying the purpose for
which data is needed and how it will be used, stored, or shared.
The second section addresses how personal data may be shared with third parties and for what purposes, such as marketing, research, or profiling. The guide also advises users to check data retention periods and confirm that deletion will occur within legally defined time limits. The NCSA encourages individuals to read privacy policies thoroughly, ask questions when unclear, and report any misuse of personal information to the appropriate authorities.
