US President Donald Trump met with top advisers at the White House Situation Room on Friday to make a "final determination" on a proposed framework to extend the ceasefire with Iran. However, the meeting concluded without any announcement on whether the deal would move forward.
Trump
said any agreement must guarantee that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon and
insisted that the Strait of Hormuz be reopened for unrestricted shipping
traffic in both directions. He also called for the destruction of any mines in
the key waterway.
US
officials said Washington and Tehran had earlier agreed on a memorandum of
understanding that would extend the ceasefire for 60 days and pave the way for
talks on the future of Iran’s nuclear programme. The framework remains subject
to approval by both Trump and Iran’s leadership.
While
Trump has repeatedly suggested that a deal is within reach, Iran has maintained
that it is not negotiating its nuclear programme, which it says is intended
solely for civilian purposes. As of now, no final agreement has been announced.
