Doha: Health experts in Qatar are urging the public to take necessary precautions as a dust storm continues to blanket the country, reducing visibility and increasing health risks, particularly respiratory issues. The Qatar Meteorology Department has forecast strong winds and widespread dust, with conditions expected to persist throughout the weekend. Originating from the northern Gulf region, the storm has led to a surge in respiratory complaints and minor traffic accidents due to limited visibility on roads.
Officials from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) are advising residents to stay indoors and wear protective face masks if venturing outside. Assistant Executive Director of HMC’s Ambulance Service, Ali Darwish, stressed the importance of safeguarding vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly, particularly those with existing respiratory conditions. He noted a noticeable increase in emergency calls—rising from the average of 800 to around 900 daily—mostly related to minor road accidents and respiratory distress. Darwish emphasized the need for caution while driving and urged those experiencing breathing difficulties to seek medical attention promptly.
Chairman of Paediatrics and Director of Paediatric Emergency Centres, Dr. Mohammed Al Amri, also called on parents to prioritize the health of children, especially those with asthma or similar conditions. He advised keeping children indoors and ensuring they carry prescribed medication, such as inhalers, to school if necessary. While paediatric emergency centres have not recorded a significant rise in cases so far, health officials continue to monitor the situation closely, encouraging the public to remain vigilant during the adverse weather conditions.
