Qatar Boat Show showcases Old Doha Port’s maritime history

Doha: The third edition of the Qatar Boat Show is offering visitors an insight into the maritime history of Old Doha Port through a special exhibition titled “A Tale of the Sea and a Meeting Point of the World”. The exhibition, unveiled at the VIP entrance, traces the port's historical journey as part of the event, which runs from November 4 to 7 at Old Doha Port.

Featuring original documents, photographs, video footage and archival materials, the exhibition highlights Qatar's longstanding relationship with the sea and the port's evolution from a traditional commercial harbour into a major tourism destination and maritime gateway. The historical journey begins in the 1950s, when the port was known as Al Fardah and served as a key centre for maritime trade.

The exhibition also documents important milestones, including the regulation of Qatar's seaports in 1966, the inauguration of New Doha Port in 1971 and the port's expansion during the following decades. It also highlights visits by prominent international figures, including Queen Elizabeth II, who arrived aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia in the late 1970s.

Following the transfer of commercial operations to Hamad Port in 2016, Old Doha Port underwent a major redevelopment to become a vibrant tourism and leisure destination while preserving its maritime heritage. The exhibition has been organised through collaboration with several national institutions, including Qatar Museums, Qatar National Library, Qatar National Archives and Milaha, highlighting the port's continuing role in Qatar's history and development in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
