New York: The State of Qatar has
reaffirmed its strong commitment to achieving a Middle East free of nuclear
weapons and other weapons of mass destruction during the 2026 Review Conference
of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear
Weapons held at the United Nations
headquarters.
Speaking
on behalf of Qatar, Saud Musfer Al Shahwani stressed that nuclear disarmament
remains a core pillar of the NPT and highlighted that complete elimination of
nuclear weapons is the only guarantee against their use. He urged nuclear-armed
states to fulfill their legal obligations under Article VI through genuine
negotiations, warning that delays weaken global trust and stability.
He further emphasized the need for a gradual and verifiable reduction of nuclear arsenals, increased transparency, and stronger confidence-building measures. Reaffirming Qatar’s stance, Al Shahwani said the Middle East must be at the forefront of global disarmament efforts, with collective action aimed at ensuring long-term peace, security, and sustainable development.
