Doha,
Qatar: Qatar is strengthening its food security through sustainable farming and
agricultural innovation, with domestic production meeting 99 percent of the
country’s demand for fresh poultry and dairy products, according to the
Ministry of Municipality. The announcement was made ahead of World Food Day on
October 16, highlighting efforts under the National Food Security Strategy
2030.
Qatar’s
self-sufficiency levels in 2025 also reached 67 percent for fresh fish and 47
percent for basic vegetables. The country is expanding sustainable agricultural
practices, including 96 hectares of cooled greenhouses aimed at increasing
productivity by 30 percent, alongside smart irrigation, modern fish farming
technologies and alternative energy initiatives.
The ministry also highlighted research using beneficial fungi to improve crop growth and productivity, with trials recording a 10 percent increase compared with conventional farming. By promoting modern farming methods, reducing food waste and improving supply chain resilience, Qatar aims to conserve natural resources and build a more sustainable food system.
