Toronto experienced the worst air quality among major global cities on Wednesday, according to Swiss firm IQAir. Canadian authorities advised residents to remain indoors as wildfire smoke surrounded the area, turning the skies a hazy yellowish-grey.
Toronto surpassed New Delhi and Kinshasa in poor air quality rankings due to smoke from wildfires, as well as higher than average temperatures, stated Armen Araradian of IQAir. Although this year's wildfire season has been less severe than in recent years, over 800 active fires are burning across the country.
Smoke from northwestern Ontario has drifted to Toronto, leading city officials to close pools, cancel summer camp programs, and shut down the official FIFA Fan Festival ahead of the semi-final match between England and Argentina.
