Tehran: U.S.-Israeli strikes hit near Iran's Bushehr nuclear power
plant on Saturday, killing a guard and prompting Russia to evacuate 198 workers
from the facility it helped construct and operate.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that continued attacks on the southern coastal plant could eventually lead to radioactive fallout that would "end life in GCC capitals, not Tehran." Bushehr is considerably closer to Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar than to the Iranian capital.
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi voiced "deep concern" over the strike,
which is the fourth such incident in recent weeks, though no increase in
radiation levels has been reported. "NPP sites or nearby areas must never
be attacked," he said.
Strikes also hit Tehran, where thick grey smoke covered the skyline. The war erupted more than a month ago after U.S.-Israeli strikes killed Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei, spreading conflict across West Asia and convulsing the global economy.
