As the world marks World No Tobacco Day on May 31, health authorities have renewed calls to combat nicotine addiction, with the 2026 campaign focusing on the theme "Unmasking the Appeal - Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction." The campaign highlights concerns over marketing tactics that target young people through attractive packaging, flavors, and social media promotions.
According
to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco use causes more than seven
million deaths each year and remains one of the leading preventable causes of
disease and premature death worldwide. Health experts warn that newer products
such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco devices are often promoted as safer
alternatives despite ongoing concerns about nicotine dependence.
Speaking
to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Dr. Anas Adel Qalfa of the Primary Health Care
Corporation (PHCC) said Qatar has adopted a comprehensive approach to tobacco
control through legislation, awareness campaigns, preventive measures, and
smoking-cessation services. The country also enforces strict regulations on
tobacco sales, advertising, and smoking in public places.
Dr. Qalfa stressed that nicotine addiction is a treatable medical condition and encouraged smokers to seek professional support through cessation clinics. He emphasized that effective treatment combines behavioral counseling, medication when needed, and continuous follow-up, helping individuals quit smoking and build healthier lives.
