Doha, Qatar:
The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced that Mowasalat (Karwa) will begin
a test run of level-4 autonomous electric robotaxis in selected areas of Qatar,
primarily focusing on tourist and service routes. The initiative is part of
Qatar’s broader strategy to adopt smart mobility solutions and sustainable
transport technologies.
The
test run will be conducted in two phases—initially without passengers under
expert supervision, followed by a fully autonomous phase with passengers
onboard. The trial period, extending through the first quarter of 2026, aims to
evaluate the operational readiness and performance of the robotaxis, while also
shaping regulatory frameworks and infrastructure requirements.
Each robotaxi will feature advanced safety and navigation technology, including six medium and long-range cameras, four radar sensors, and four lidar units. This pilot builds on the successful trial of autonomous e-buses and aligns with the MoT’s Autonomous Vehicle Strategy to enhance eco-friendly public transport across Qatar.
